Nick Oliver – Senior Solicitor, Blake Lapthorn (London) 

Nick joined Blake Lapthorn at the beginning of 2002 to head up the firm’s Insolvency & Business Recovery operation in London. Nick qualified in 1996, and was previously a partner at a niche London commercial practice where he specialised in insolvency and business rescue work. In addition to acting for Insolvency Practitioners, Nick has provided technical advice on insolvency matters to clients ranging from banks and multi-national companies, through to senior officers with HM Customs & Excise and the Inland Revenue. In his previous position, Nick became particularly known for his contentious insolvency work. He was also instrumental in a new initiative launched in tandem with the Insolvency Service to take civil recovery proceedings against delinquent directors on a conditional fee basis, to produce better returns to creditors. Nick is a member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (to whom he has also lectured) and the Insolvency Lawyers Association. Following from work involving intellectual property issues, Nick is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents

Stephen Hunt - Partner, Griffins Licensed Insolvency Practitioners

Steve has been with Griffins since 1991, having previously worked in banking and credit control. A Licensed Insolvency Practitioner, he is well-known for his work in recovery based insolvency. He is also responsible for the Landau case in 1996, where the court held that the benefits from a bankrupt's personal pension belonged to creditors. This case made many additional millions of assets available for creditors, and the judgment has been cited in many other cases. In addition to numerous successful actions in bankruptcies, 

Steve had also been involved in a number of contentious corporate appointments, including Provisional Liquidations. He has also conducted a number of actions to remove incumbent Insolvency Practitioners and then either sue for negligence or improve the conduct of the insolvency. Steve has acted for and with HM Customs & Excise and the Inland Revenue on a number of difficult cases. 

He is a member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (to whom he has also lectured), an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales, and a member of the Insolvency Practitioners Association. Steve regularly writes articles on a range of insolvency subjects. He is also a member of the Insolvency Practitioners System Computer User Committee, advising and commenting on improvements to the insolvency industry’s leading software.

Tim Bramston – Kingston Smith & Partners LLP

Tim Bramston is an Insolvency Partner specialising in forensic investigatory and personal insolvency work. He also acts in relation to corporate and advisory insolvency matters. Tim is a licensed insolvency practitioner, a member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals and the Insolvency Practitioners Association, with over 14 years experience in all areas of Insolvency. He worked for an international practice and left to start his own practice in 1992. Tim then joined Kingston Smith & Partners in January 1999. He has a general interest in sports, cricket, rugby and football and also enjoys travel, cycling, films and music.
 

Ian Defty – Partner. Kingston Smith & Partners LLP

Ian joined  the Corporate Recovery and business reconstruction practice of Kingston Smith & Partners, in June 2001, as a Senior Manager. He  has specific responsibility for Forensic Insolvency Recovery Service (FIRS).  FIRS is a team that was established to assess, investigate and pursue insolvency related claims, many on a conditional fee basis, to produce better returns to creditors. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and an insolvency practitioner. Ian is also a  member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals and the Insolvency Practitioners Association. Ian has over fifteen years of experience in insolvency, with particular expertise in company directors disqualification matters. Prior to joining Kingston Smith & Partners, Ian worked for The Insolvency Service, undertaking a wide cross section of insolvency work. He has dealt more specifically with bankruptcy, company liquidations and director disqualification. Ian regularly provides both comment to and has written articles for the business press on insolvency related matters and specifically civil recovery matters. He also lectures extensively.

Frances Coulson - Partner, Moon Beever Solicitors

Frances graduated with Honours in Law from Kings College, London University, and trained at Moon Beever, becoming a Solicitor in 1984. She obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in European Law in 1993. Frances became a Partner in 1988 and was made Managing Partner in 2000.

In 1999, Frances was instrumental in the formation of ShawnCoulson, a law firm with offices around the world, which she manages jointly with William Shawn of the Washington DC office.

Frances is a Member of the Insolvency Lawyers Association, R3 (the Association of Business Recovery Professionals), the European Insolvency Practitioners Association and the Society of Computers and Law. She is a regular speaker on numerous topics, including insolvency, e-commerce and practice management, around the UK and overseas.

Mother of 3 daughters and proud owner of a house husband, who enables all, Frances is an avid equestrian but also enjoys reading and the theatre (time permitting).

Kevin  established and now heads a national team dedicated to the tracing and recovery of assets, usually via bankruptcy or liquidation insolvency processes in both local and foreign jurisdictions.  His team is currently involved in c.300 cases of differing size.

He regularly receives instructions from HM Customs & Excise, Inland Revenue, Banking Institutions and Solicitors where it is feared that assets have been dissipated by the owners or directors of businesses.  His team specialises in recreating and reviewing financial records to establish whether assets have been removed and where they now are.  Together with specialist lawyers and counsel he will then undertake the task of recovering assets for the benefit of creditors, either by agreement or litigation.  This role often entails his team working closely with the Insolvency Service, the Fraud Squad and the investigation departments of both the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise.

Kevin Hellard joined the Bristol office of RSM Robson Rhodes in 1991 having first qualified as a lawyer.  He qualified as an Insolvency Practitioner in 1994 and moved to the London office in 1995.  He became a member of the Institute of Credit Management in 1999.

He has been involved in numerous fraud investigations and asset tracing assignments and has also worked on an assignment on behalf of the Serious Fraud Office.
